Wow what a name for a fish curry!!!!!!!thats what I thought when I first heard of this recipe from my friend Girija chechi and chettan(chechi's H).I think it was more of chettan telling me the recipe. Its fish we make with kudampulli. If you watch the video on youtube you will realise that the boatmen make it very hot with loads of green chillies and red chilli powder.I would end up with Gaviscon and a sleepless night so have put a fraction of chilli powder comparitively.
Fish-1/2kg,cleaned and cut(I have used King fish)
Ginger-1inch ,finely chopped
Garlic-5 finely chopped
Shallots-10 finely chopped
Curry leaves-2sprigs
Chilli powder-1tbsp
Turmeric-1/2tsp
Mustard seeds-1tsp
Fenugreek seeds-1tsp
Kudampulli(gambojee)-2
Coconut oil-2+1tbsp
Salt-as per taste
I have used an earthernware but you can substitute it with any deep pan.Add 2tbsp oil. When its hot,add the mustard seeds. When it starts to splutter add the fenugreek seeds.Once the fenugreek is golden colour add the chopped ginger, garlic, shallots and curry leaves.Saute it for a minute. Now add the chilli powder .Heat the mix but do not burn the chilli. Now add 11/2cup of water. When the water start to boil add the fish pieces, pulli, turmeric and salt. When it starts to boil, sim the flame.Do not cover the vessel.Let the fish cook and the gravy reduce to the desired amount. Before switching of the flame add 1tbsp of coconut oil and just swirl the vessel around.Leave it for 1/2 hour.
Serve with rice!!!!!

hey Biny. Both my maternal and paternal families, make their fish curry this way.But never heard of the name "boatman" :-). The only difference my mother makes, is to roast the spices (chilli, turmeric n fenugreek) and then beat it in the blender with a little water. This way it takes the raw smell and taste of the powders.
I don't make this at all though I love it b'cos my husband doesn't prefer fish curry of any type, esp not this b'cos its way too spicy for him. And i'm always craving :-(
Love the recipes name and the curry.
